2 Needless Deaths

From the yard her brother and sister bunnies watched as I picked her out of the street and carried her and laid her in the grass. “Roadkill.” They got to a respectable distance inside the bushes to say goodbye. Do you think that they do not know pain? Do you think that they do not know loss? Then you do not know my creatures.

One less rabbit does not make the world a worse place, but the needless death made me cry.  The family waited in the grass for a child that would never return.

Please build animal crossing tunnels. Please observe animal crossing signs. Please drive less. Please carpool and use public transportation. We can reduce these needless deaths.

I also saw this adult squirrel a little further on.

Biking the same four miles through suburbs of Dallas for nearly two years, I see “roadkill” every day:  Racoon, downy woodpecker, frogs, turtles, squirrels, rabbits (often), possums, cardinals, or grackles. The effect of cars is worse than most people realize.

  1. It’s not the effect of cars, it’s the *speed*at which they move that causes this. Most animals are quick enough to respond when cars travel at a maximum of 60 km/hour. No idea what that is in miles/hour, but just so you know. Driving at that maximum speed not just saves a lot of CO2 emissions, it accounts for 85-100% reduction in roadkill, where they researched this here in Europe, The Netherlands; They changed the speed limit (and enforced it by traject-control) on a couple of roads in the middle of forestry, and counted the victims before and after.
